Your child studies their Science notes, recognises the terms and seems ready for the test. Then the questions ask them to interpret a graph, explain a circuit or use evidence to choose an answer. Suddenly, they are unsure what to do.

For Nigerian and African parents raising a teenager in Calgary, Edmonton or elsewhere in Alberta, this can be frustrating. You may be putting time into revision at home and still seeing disappointing results. The difficulty may lie in how your child uses what they know, rather than how many facts they can remember.

Alberta’s Grade 9 Science Provincial Achievement Test (PAT) covers five topics: biological diversity, matter and chemical change, environmental chemistry, electrical principles and technologies, and space exploration. Its questions assess both scientific knowledge and skills, including interpreting information and solving problems.

Why can my child know the topic but miss the question?

Consider a student who has memorised the meaning of electrical current. If a question shows a circuit diagram and asks what will happen when a switch opens, knowing the definition alone may not be enough. The student needs to follow the path through the circuit and explain what changes.

A similar problem appears when a question includes a graph. Your child might understand the lesson but overlook an axis label, misread a scale or choose an answer before checking what the data shows.

Look at a few recent marked assignments together. Ask your child to explain why they chose each answer they got wrong. Their explanation will tell you more than another hour spent rereading notes.

Five Grade 9 Science areas to check

You do not need to reteach the entire course at home. Start by finding the type of question that causes trouble.

1. Biological diversity

Can your child explain a relationship between organisms and their environment? If they can define a term but cannot use it to explain a new example, ask them to draw or describe the relationship in their own words.

2. Matter and chemical change

Check whether your child can tell what evidence a question gives for a chemical change. Encourage them to point to the observation in the question before giving an answer.

3. Environmental chemistry

A question may include measurements or a graph. Ask: “What is being measured? What do the numbers show? Which answer is supported by those numbers?” This helps your child practise using evidence.

4. Electrical principles and technologies

If circuit diagrams are a struggle, have your child trace the circuit with a finger and talk through what each part does. A tutor can then check whether the difficulty is with the science idea, the diagram or both.

5. Space exploration

Watch for answers based on a fact your child remembers rather than the information supplied in the question. Practise reading the question first, identifying what it asks, and then choosing the relevant science knowledge.

What should parents do before buying more practice materials?

Ask for one recent test or assignment. Find two or three questions your child missed and look for a pattern. Are the mistakes mostly about vocabulary, diagrams, calculations, graphs or written explanations?

Speak with the Science teacher. You can ask: “Which Grade 9 Science topics should my child focus on now?” and “Are they having more difficulty with content or with applying it in questions?” These are useful questions whether your child has recently moved to Alberta or has always attended school there.

Make practice short and specific. Try 20 minutes on one weak skill. For example, use one circuit diagram or one graph and ask your child to explain their reasoning aloud. Check the explanation together before moving to another question.

Use Alberta’s released materials. The province provides released Grade 9 Science questions and information about the PAT. Ask your child’s school which materials and practice options fit their current course.

When might a Grade 9 Science tutor help?

Consider extra support if your child repeatedly gets stuck on the same kind of question, cannot explain an answer after reviewing it, or has begun avoiding Science homework. Bring their recent schoolwork to the first conversation with a tutor. It gives the tutor a starting point for identifying the gap and planning lessons around it.

If your family is adjusting to schooling in Canada, you can also ask the tutor to explain how they will use your child’s Alberta classwork and teacher feedback. The support should address what your child is learning at school and give them chances to practise explaining their thinking.
